Job Detail Job Title: Administrative Director - Orthopaedic Surgery Department: Orthopaedic Surgery Location: Farmington FTE%: 1 Shift Search #: 2023-710 Closing Date: Recruiter: Smith, Joyce Administrative Director - Orthopedics   Purpose of class: At UConn Health, this position is responsible for the direction and management of the academic administration including the academic financial operations, research endeavors of the Orthopedic Department and Musculoskeletal Institute (MSI). Supervision Received: Works under the general director of an employee of higher grade; reporting to the Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Co-Director of the MSI. Supervision Exercised: Directs and manages the academic administrative, fiscal and research staff of the department as assigned. Examples of Duties / Responsibilities. Oversees and reviews the work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; oversees recruitment, hiring, grievances, discipline and termination of academic staff; provides leadership and direction to staff in developing and implementing annual goals and objectives. Collaborates with Chair and management to monitor ongoing academic operations to ensure appropriate staff and provider coverage Collaborate with the Chair and UConn Health Administration to set goals and objectives for the department Assists in the recruitment, scheduling and on boarding of new providers Help develop short- and long-term strategic plan for departmental growth, based on departmental and institutional needs Will work in collaboration with the Director /MSI Ambulatory services to assist with investigating patient complaints and patient satisfaction opportunities. Through associations with national organizations, keeps up to date on trends in care delivery Develop a trusting relationship with providers to provide support Work with IT department, in collaboration to ensure the performance and effectiveness of information technologies Oversees forecasting and business planning; prepares and presents academic operating and capital annual budgets. Assists in the development, implementation, interpretation and administration of policies, procedures and standards ensuring compliance of internal and external regulatory requirements. Provides administrative and financial oversight and guidance; evaluates and recommends purchases or leases of capital equipment; monitors allocation of contracts and staffing resources based on department variance/recommendations, investigates and controls expenditures; assists in investment, maintenance, and accountability of funds Monitor and evaluate contracted services when needed in collaboration with procurement Assists in the development of new programs and/or enhancement of current programs, including financial analysis, space, and resource planning; works with obtaining funding/gifts. Provides input to improve current services and business processes to ensure appropriate support to providers and programs. Collaborate with MSI Co-Directors to ensure smooth operations of the MSI research laboratory, assist with equipment maintenance and replacement Continuously communicate with academic staff and collaborate leadership to promote employee satisfaction in support of fulfilling department and center objectives Attends meetings, conferences and seminars as required (which may include off shifts) Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skill & Ability Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and techniques. Considerable knowledge of administrative business and financial operations. Knowledge of accounting and cost accounting techniques. Considerable interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all members of the organization in ways that enhance understanding, respect, and cooperation. Strong oral and written communications skills. Outstanding organizational skills to prioritize competing timetables, responsibilities, and deadlines. Project management skills including strategy development, quality, data analysis, action planning; execution, and development of monitoring tools. Ability to delegate, effectively supervise and plan for the timely and successful completion of long- and short-term objectives. Considerable ability to work under highly stressful conditions.   Education and Training. General Experience Ten (10) years progressive administrative or fiscal management in a healthcare environment. Master’s degree in healthcare, Business Administration or equivalent.  SPECIAL EXPERIENCE:   At least 3 years of general experience must be in a supervisory / management capacity. An understanding of and demonstrated experience in an Academic healthcare system.   PREFERRED EXPERIENCE  Knowledge of basic clinical research and funding.   Substitution Allowed:   Bachelor’s degree in Business or Hospital Administration, Finance or related field may be substituted for four (4) years of the general experience.   Master’s degree in business or Hospital Administration, Finance or related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of general experience.   Why UConn Health UConn Health is a vibrant, integrated academic medical center that is entering an era of unprecedented growth in all three areas of its mission: academics, research, and clinical care.
