About Winston-Salem, NC

Centrally located in North Carolina between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Atlantic Ocean, Winston-Salem offers rich historic roots and vibrant arts and cultural experiences in an innovative business environment.

Winston-Salem is conveniently situated between Raleigh (2-hour drive), Charlotte (1.5-hour drive), Atlanta (5-hour drive) and Washington D.C. (5-hour drive). This culturally diverse town also lies just east of Yadkin Valley, North Carolina’s first and largest American Viticultural Area (AVA) with more than 45 vineyards and wineries.

The town is home to six colleges and universities including Salem College, Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State universities, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), Carolina University and Forsyth Technical Community College.

Winston-Salem’s downtown district of Old Salem focuses on the town’s former Moravian settlers, and there is a steadfast effort to keep parts of downtown in a time warp to the 18th century. It’s like a little slice of Old Williamsburg in the center of a mid-sized city.

Old Salem was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966 and draws visitors with its more than 120 locally owned restaurants, art galleries, retail shops and entertainment venues. The district was voted as one of Forbes’ Top 10 Best Downtowns.

Winston-Salem was also voted as one of the top ten places to retire in the United States by the U.S. News and World Report 2020.
